Digital Desk: A 64-year-old Indian woman died after allegedly jumping from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship while it was navigating the Singapore Strait. Her son had earlier asked for help from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) and the Ministry of External Affairs, claiming that the cruise company was avoiding responsibility in locating his mother.
In an update, Sahani informed that his mother had died. Following several attempts, the cruise company finally showed the CCTV footage, and officials launched a hunt for the body. Sahani thanked Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), and the Indian Embassy in Singapore for their invaluable assistance during this difficult time.
The Indian High Commission is actively communicating with the family and maintaining close contact with Singaporean authorities in order to manage essential matters and aid with legal procedures. Moreover, they have reached out to the Royal Caribbean Cruises India head, promising complete assistance in the matter.
Earlier, he stated that the ship's crew informed him that his mother, Reetha Sahani, had jumped off the 'Spectrum of the Seas' cruise ship when it was on its route to Singapore, as per a report by Strait Times. He said that the team had not supplied any surveillance footage to substantiate the occurrence and had not performed a rescue mission to locate his mother. Additionally, they off-boarded his father, Jakesh Sahani, from the ship. Sahani stated that they were still unsure of his mother's location and that they suspected she was still on the ship, possibly trapped somewhere.
According to Sahani's account to the Strait Times, they had requested to check the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, but they had not yet gotten it to confirm if the woman who jumped was truly his mother. He expressed his concerns about his mother's inability to swim and added that his father had been questioned by police for hours about the incident.
According to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the "passenger fell into the Singapore Strait." In response, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) is leading the search efforts and has issued a navigational safety broadcast to all vessels in the Singapore Strait and port, requesting that they remain mindful for the missing person and immediately report any sightings to the MRCC.
