After the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution supporting the suggestion made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth in Lisbon, the first Youth Day was celebrated in 1999.

    History of International Youth Day 

    The United Nations General Assembly started making a concentrated attempt to have an impact on young people in 1965. They supported the Declaration on Promoting the Ideals of Peace, Mutual Respect, and Inter-Peace among Youth. They started committing time and money to empowering the youth by recognizing rising leaders and giving them tools to address global issues.

    On December 17, 1999, the UN General Assembly approved the establishment of International Youth Day following a recommendation from the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth. Since the first commemoration of the day took place on August 12, 2000, it has functioned as a venue for social education.
