Digital Desk: Israel launched simultaneous airstrikes on Thursday, targeting Syria's primary airports in the capital city of Damascus and the northern metropolis of Aleppo. Syrian state media reported that the attacks resulted in the temporary suspension of airport operations, marking the first such assault since a weekend offensive by Hamas led to a fierce and ongoing conflict.

According to the Agence France-Presse (AFP), Israeli airstrikes have repeatedly disrupted flight operations at both airports, which are under the control of the war-torn Syrian government.

SANA, the state news agency, cited a military source in confirming that the "simultaneous" attacks inflicted damage to the runways of both airports, rendering them inoperative.

These attacks unfolded amid the sixth day of intense fighting between Israel and the militant group Hamas, sparked by a surprise Hamas offensive that saw the launch of 5,000 rockets into Israel and a coordinated assault across air, land, and sea. In response, Israel declared war on Hamas and has continued to strike targets in Gaza.

On the diplomatic front, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Israel on Thursday, while Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi engaged in a telephone conversation with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, urging Arab and Islamic nations to unite against Israel.

Just days ago, Israeli forces responded to rocket attacks from southern Syria by firing artillery and mortar shells into Syrian territory, illustrating the volatility of the situation.

The airstrikes on the Syrian airports are believed to have the objective of disrupting Iranian supply lines to Syria, where Tehran's influence has expanded significantly since it began supporting President Bashar al-Assad during the civil war that commenced in 2011.

Throughout the course of the decade-long Syrian conflict, Israel has conducted hundreds of air raids in Syria, primarily targeting Iran-backed forces, Lebanese Hezbollah fighters, and Syrian military positions, according to the AFP.

The situation in the Middle East remains fluid and volatile, with the international community watching closely as tensions continue to escalate.
