Digital Desk: Authorities allege a man who went on a shooting rampage at a Texas outlet mall on Saturday killed eight people before being slain himself.
The shooting triggered fear at Allen Premium Outlets, a vast shopping centre 25 miles (40 km) north of Dallas that was packed with weekend customers.
According to Allen police chief Brian Harvey, firing sounded around 3:30 p.m. (20:30 GMT) while a police officer was on a separate call in the mall.
"He heard shots being fired, went to the firing area, engaged and neutralized the suspect," Harvey explained. "He then later requested ambulances."
The shooter's identity has not been revealed. When more cops came, his body was found sprawled on a sidewalk, one of seven deaths in the mall.
"Three are in critical surgery, and four are stable," said Boyd, the fire chief, of the injured at surrounding hospitals.
A hospital spokesman informed NBC News that some of the victims were as young as five years old.
Governor Greg Abbott of Texas termed the incident an "unspeakable tragedy."
President Joe Biden "has been briefed on the shooting," a White House spokesman said.
Local officials praised the cop who confronted and killed the shooter.
"We owe a debt of gratitude to the first responders who ran towards the gunfire and acted quickly to neutralize the threat," said Keith Self, a Republican congressman from Allen's district.
CNN video showed the shooter stepping out of a car in the mall's parking area and starting his attack.
Authorities first suspected that a second shooter was on the loose. As police searched the mall's stores, anxious shoppers and store staff raced into parking lots.
Harvey later stated that authorities believe the alleged gunman, who was wearing tactical gear and was wearing it, "acted alone."
According to NBC News, Janet St. James, a spokesman for Medical City Healthcare, which oversees multiple trauma hospitals in North Texas, said the hospital received eight patients from the incident, ranging in age from five to 61.
A father who came to the mall after his daughter, who was inside, called to alert him about the shooting, also told CNN that police had advised him that a second shooter was possible.
"We saw the police outside the door, and they told us we had to go, and that they are still looking for the person," Jaynal Pervez told CNN.
"There are no longer any safe havens." "I'm at a loss for what to do."
Pervez subsequently told CBS that the atmosphere in the mall parking lot was hectic.
"I saw shoes around there, people's cell phones on the street," he explained.
