Digital Desk: Mitchell Starc earned his first Allan Border medal, while Ashleigh Gardner became the first indigenous person to win the Belinda Clark award at the Cricket Australia (CA) Awards on Saturday.
Starc was recognized for his outstanding performance in all three formats of the game over the course of a year, taking 43 wickets. He is only the sixth bowler to win the award in 22 years, defeating Mitchell Marsh by one vote. The winners were chosen through a voting process for the years 2021-2022.
Starc had a double celebration as he was also named men's ODI player of the year. He is the only fast bowler to win the award since its debut in 2000, joining Pat Cummins, Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee, and Glenn McGrath.
Gardner finished the year as Australia's third-highest run-scorer and fifth-highest wicket-taker. She amassed 281 runs at a 35.10 average, including four half-centuries, and took nine wickets. She won the Belinda Clark award with 54 votes, beating Beth Mooney (47) and Alyssa Healy (39).
For the third time, Alyssa Healy, the star wicketkeeper-batter, was named the women's ODI player of the year.
Marsh, who was the hero of last year's T20 World Cup final, was crowned men's T20 player of the year following a stellar year. He garnered 53 votes, which put him ahead of Josh Hazlewood (29) and spinner Ashton Agar (22). (26).
Beth Mooney has earned the Women's T20 Player of the Year title for the second year in a row. She finished ahead of Tahlia McGrath (10) and Gardner with 13 votes (6). Travis Head won Test Player of the Year for his outstanding Ashes performance, which included two match-winning hundred.
Players, umpires, and media representatives voted to decide the award winners throughout the year.
