Digital Desk: Russian President Vladimir Putin raised concern on Tuesday over the "catastrophic increase" in casualties among civilians since hostilities between Israel and the Hamas militant group erupted over the weekend.
During a phone chat with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, "emphasis was placed on the sharply worsening situation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict zone," said the Kremlin.
"Deep concern was expressed about the continuing escalation of violence and the catastrophic increase in the number of civilian casualties," the statement said.
During the conversation, Putin and Erdogan emphasised the necessity for "an immediate ceasefire" as well as "the resumption of the negotiation process."

Earlier on Tuesday, Putin termed the establishment of a Palestinian state "necessary" in order to end the decades-long conflict, claiming that the fresh battle between Israel and Hamas highlighted the "failure" of US policies in the Middle East.
