Digital Desk: A wave of terror swept through the city of Lewiston, Maine on Wednesday night after a mass shooting incident left at least 22 people dead and several injured. The rampage took place across three locations, including Schemengees Bar and Grille Restaurant, a Walmart store, and Sparetime Recreation, sending shockwaves through the community.

Local authorities quickly issued an emergency alert, urging residents to take shelter as the active shooter remained at large. The situation intensified as the Lewiston Police Department released images of a suspect wielding a high-powered assault-style rifle, identified as Robert Card, who has now become a person of interest in the ongoing investigation.

Robert Card is a firearms instructor in the US Army Reserve but has recently been discharged from a mental health facility after reporting hallucinations, raising concerns about his mental state. Lewiston police issued a statement on Facebook, urging the public to be cautious: "CARD should be considered armed and dangerous. Please contact law enforcement if you are aware of his whereabouts."

Maine Governor Janet Mills expressed her concern and urged residents to follow the guidance of local and state law enforcement. She stated, "I will continue to monitor the situation and remain in close contact with public safety officials."

In the wake of the tragic events, US President Joe Biden reached out to Maine lawmakers, including Governor Mills, Senators Angus King and Susan Collins, and Congressman Jared Golden. The White House extended full federal support to the community as they grappled with this horrific attack.

The Lewiston Police Department released additional information about the shooter's vehicle, describing it as having a front bumper painted black. They continue to work diligently to locate Robert Card and bring him to justice. In a show of solidarity, the FBI and US Homeland Security offered their assistance in the investigation, pledging to work closely with local law enforcement.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security expressed condolences for the victims and their families while commending the bravery of the first responders and law enforcement officers. The statement said, "The entire Department of Homeland Security grieves with the loved ones of those killed and injured and stands with the brave law enforcement officers and first responders who are currently working to secure and safeguard the people of Lewiston."

The FBI office in Boston also expressed its readiness to assist in the investigation, emphasizing a coordinated approach with local, state, and federal partners. They are prepared to offer any necessary resources, including evidence response, investigative and tactical support, as well as victim assistance.

As the people of Lewiston come to terms with the devastating events of Wednesday night, their resilience and the support from various agencies across the nation will be critical in helping the community heal and find answers in the midst of this tragedy. The search for Robert Card and the pursuit of justice continue as the nation watches and mourns the loss of innocent lives.
