US State Pennsylvania declares Diwali as official Holiday
Saval stated that community centres, temples, and places of worship all over our Commonwealth participate in the annual Diwali festival of light and connectivity.

Digital Desk: Senator Nikil Saval tweeted on Wednesday that Pennsylvania announced the Hindu festival of Diwali a national holiday.

United States Pennsylvania has declared the Hindu festival of Diwali as a national holiday, Senator Nikil Saval tweeted on Wednesday.

"The Senate voted unanimously to recognize Diwali as an official holiday! To all Pennsylvanians who celebrate this festival of light and connection: you are seen, you are welcome, you matter. Thank you, @rothman_greg, for the opportunity to join you in introducing this bill," tweeted Senator Nikil Saval.

In February of this year, according to My Twin Tiers, state senators Greg Rothman and Nikil Saval presented legislation to make Diwali an official state holiday in Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania is home to over 200,000 South Asian people, many of whom celebrate Diwali as a season of reflection and reunion, according to My Twin Tiers.

According to Rothman, thousands of Pennsylvanians—including many people who live in the 34th Senatorial District—celebrate Diwali every year. Rothman added, "Recognising Diwali as an official state holiday upholds and celebrates our Commonwealth's rich cultural diversity."

Saval stated that community centres, temples, and places of worship all over our Commonwealth participate in the annual Diwali festival of light and connectivity.

"This is a moment for contemplation on the never-ending victory of light over darkness, giving us fresh focus on our goals. I'm thrilled to work with Senator Rothman to achieve official recognition for this festival," Saval continued.

Diwali is celebrated on a different day each year, however this year it will be on November 12. According to My Twin Tiers, Senate Bill 402 does not mandate that schools or the government close.
