When the plane halted in Amsterdam for a layover, Tamara and her newborn were hurried to the hospital.
Digital Desk: A woman who didn't realize she was pregnant unexpectedly gave birth mid-flight last week, leaving the plane with one more passenger than when it took off, according to a report.
Tamara, the new mother, was caught off guard when she went to the washroom on the KLM flight with a stomach ache and ended up giving birth.
According to The Mirror, the occurrence took place on a KLM Royal Dutch flight from Guyaquil, Ecuador, to Spain, which included a few medical professionals among the passengers who could assist with the birth.
When the plane halted in Amsterdam for a layover, Tamara and her newborn were hurried to the hospital.
"Her stomach ached a few hours before takeoff, so she decided to use the restroom. She was greatly surprised when, following just two contractions, she found herself holding a newborn," a hospital spokeswoman said.
The spokesperson stated, "Tamara had no idea she was pregnant and was quite taken aback by the situation.
"The birthing team did everything they could to make sure that both received proper treatment and were headed to get Maximiliano's documentation. Tamara and Maximiliano will go on to Madrid as soon as they can. The Spaarne Gasthuis sends its best regards to them," the hospital continued.
Two doctors and a nurse from Austria were on the plane and were able to help with the delivery, an airline spokesperson said. Both the mother and baby are currently “doing well,” the airline said.
Tamara named her new baby Maximiliano after one of the helpful passengers who stayed by her side and helped her deliver the baby safely, as per reports.
