    The first World Press Freedom Day was commemorated on May 3, 1993, and it has since become an annual event honoured in many countries throughout the world.

In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly designated World Press Freedom Day. This proclamation followed a recommendation made in 1991 during UNESCO's twenty-sixth General Conference session. World Press Freedom Day is celebrating its 30th year this year.

    African journalists originated the concept of World Press Freedom Day during a UNESCO session in Namibia in 1991. They wished to call attention to the critical role that the press plays in supporting democracy, as well as to the numerous hazards that journalists suffer while performing their duties.

    than a right; it is an essential component of a free and democratic society.



    On World Press Freedom Day 2023, the
    UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize, which recognizes the enormous
    achievements of journalists, particularly those who risk their lives to convey
    vital information to the public, will also be presented.
