Illegal Immigration Problem In Us: Obama To Biden All Failed To Handle

The New York Times reported in 2023 that there are approximately 11 million undocumented immigrants in the US, which is three times the number that was there in 1990.

Digital Desk: Elon Musk, known for his bold tweets and criticism of the US government, retweeted an X post that says, “U.S. has 5 million more illegal migrants than it did in 2020.” Showing a graph, the post further states that the US has seen an “exponential increase in illegal migration since Biden took office.”

The issue of immigration has been the top-most issue in the current presidential election of 2024. The number of migrants entering the United States over its border with Mexico has increased recently, particularly under Joe Biden's presidency. "US Customs and Border Protection released more than 2.3 million migrants into the country at the southern border under the Biden administration, allowing in the vast majority of migrant families and some adult groups," according to a Washington Post report that cited DHS's most recent data.

Although opponents of Biden contend that his policies have boosted immigration to the US, events much outside his control have also had a significant impact.

Furthermore, the current surge in unauthorized border crossings has been attributed in part to the growth in global migration. Millions of Venezuelans have fled the country as a result of the economic catastrophe. Many have been driven out of Central America by gang violence.

According to The Economist, tens of thousands of people are currently trying to cross the border and enter the Americas from nations like China (24,000), India (42,000), and Russia (43,000 in the year ending in September 2023).

Recent U.S. presidents, including Obama, Trump, and Biden, have struggled to address unauthorized migration. Obama aimed for a balance of empathy and enforcement, Trump prioritized strict enforcement measures, and Biden has revived the empathy-and-enforcement strategy by resuming deferred action for minors, aiding Venezuelans, and tightening asylum qualifications.
