Digital Desk: Rishi Sunak, who is expected to run for Britain's prime ministership for the second time this year, has already drawn a lot of attention for his personal wealth. This year, the Sunday Times Rich List estimated Rishi Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty's total wealth at £730 million, ranking them at 222 on the UK's wealthiest 250-person list.
Sunak is claimed to be the wealthiest member of the House of Commons, while his wife, Akshata, is said to be wealthier than British Queen Elizabeth II, with assets totaling £430 million.
Real estate worth £15m
Sunak and Murty own four homes: two in London, one in Yorkshire, and one in Los Angeles.
The five-bedroom Kensington home alone is reported to be valued at £7 million. Additionally, the four-story mansion has its own garden. There is another home in London's Old Brompton Road, apparently where the extended family stays when they visit.
The pair owns a Grade II listed Georgian mansion in Yorkshire, which is set on 12 acres and includes an ornamental lake.
Meanwhile, the penthouse in California overlooks the beach where Baywatch was filmed.
Their finances were scrutinized as the Labour Party demanded that he be more open about the loans he used to fund his businesses. According to the Guardian, Rishi was compelled to explain how he handled his family's wealth, which is estimated to be worth £730 million.
How Sunak earn his money?
Rishi Sunak's pay as Chancellor was £151,649, and if he wins the leadership election, he will earn considerably more.
Prior to going into politics, Sunak was a partner in two extremely successful hedge funds and worked as an analyst for Goldman Sachs from 2001 to 2004. Sunak was a multi-millionaire in his mid-20s, according to The Times(opens in new tab).
However, most of his wealth is from his marriage to Akshata Murthy, who owns a 0.93% stake worth £690m in Infosys.
Earlier this year, he also ran into trouble when the Independent newspaper claimed that Akshata, who is still an Indian national, had non-domiciled status in the UK and non-liable to pay taxes in the UK. In fact, her domicile status allows her to save roughly £20 million in taxes on profits from her Infosys shares. This immediately harmed his reputation while he was running for the same position earlier this year.
Critics have also utilized expensive clothes and homes to portray him as disconnected from the general public.
