This is the first time a major politician has been included on the list since 1989, with the country experiencing inflation and skyrocketing petrol prices.
Digital Desk: The controversy regarding the wealth of England’s finance minister Rishi Sunak and his wife, Akshata Murty, has been brewing for quite some time. Akshata Murty, daughter of the IT firm Infosys co-founder Narayan Murty, currently has a 0.9 percent stake in the company that earned her £11.6m in dividend income last year.
As a result, Sunak, for the first time, made it to the list of the Sunday Times rich list. Moreover, the pair placed in the 222nd spot with an estimated £730m valuation.
This is the first time a major politician has been included on the list since 1989, with the country experiencing inflation and skyrocketing petrol prices. This could put Sunak in the spotlight once again.
Notably, according to The Guardian, Sunak owns four residences worth an estimated £15 million, including a £5 million Santa Monica penthouse. Sunak’s presence on the list prompted Justice Secretary Dominic Raab to respond, saying that this does not mean that he is not in touch with the struggles of the general public.
Raab told Times Radio, “He’s a terrific example of someone who’s done well in business and is now coming to make a significant contribution to public service. We want more of those people.”
Moreover, while commenting on the Sunday Times list, Raab stated, “I think it’s fantastic that you’ve got someone of British-Indian origin, showing all the people in our country that you can get to the top of politics. And frankly, I think if I understood correctly, the Sunday Times rich list was a reflection of not just him but his wife. His wife is an incredibly successful entrepreneur in her own right.”
