But Phoebe's journey isn't just about speed—it's a story of quiet rebellion, resilience, and relentless passion
Digital Desk: Phoebe Nongrum has already etched her name in Indian motorsport history as the first professional Formula 4 race car driver from the Northeastern region as well as the first female driver from her area. Her concentration is now entirely focused on winning the Indian National Rally Championship (INRC) 2025 to create another historical milestone.
After missing the 2024 INRC title by a heartbreaking margin of just two seconds, Phoebe returns with renewed grit and determination. She currently competes in the JK Tyre-powered Indian Racing Festival, which celebrates motorsport for 10 days starting from April 12 to 22 in cities including Kohima, Aizawl, Shillong, Guwahati, and Gangtok to inspire existing fans and new racing enthusiasts.
However, Phoebe’s journey isn’t just about speed- it’s a story of quiet rebellion, resilience, and passion. When she turned twelve, she learned to drive secretly in Shillong under the pretense that she was playing basketball. At the age of 14 she drove a Maruti Gypsy along the Guwahati-Shillong highway with full vehicular control.
The ending of her educational journey in Bengaluru caused a major shift, which forced her to abandon racing for about fifteen years. The need to pursue motorsport activities remained constant in her life. She initially returned to motorsport by volunteering before organizing events, and finally established herself as a racing competitor. Her comeback began with a win at an autocross event in Shillong.
In 2019, she was selected by Ahura Racing to join India’s first all-women Formula racing team. She began her professional career in 2021 at the JK Tyre National Racing Championship, which led to a podium spot among 26 experienced drivers in the Formula LGB 4 category.
Today Phoebe serves as an inspirational example to every young aspirer who proves that no matter how challenging the journey get it will always bring you to great accomplishments.
