Rishi Sunak, the first Indian-origin politician to hold the high UK Cabinet office of Chancellor of the Exchequer, resigned earlier this week from Boris Johnson's cabinet.
Digital Desk: Former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak announced his bid to succeed Boris Johnson as Conservative Party leader and UK Prime Minister the day after he resigned.
Sunak took to Twitter and wrote: "I’m standing to be the next leader of the Conservative Party and your Prime Minister. Let’s restore trust, rebuild the economy, and reunite the country. "
Sunak, the first Indian-origin politician to serve as Chancellor of the Exchequer in the UK Cabinet, resigned from Johnson's cabinet earlier this week.
Sunak, who reportedly had a private spat with the prime minister about overspending, went on to say "The public has every right to expect the government to be run properly, competently, and seriously," he added. "I understand that this may be my final ministerial position, but I believe these standards are worth fighting for, which is why I am resigning."
Sunak had previously been praised for his calm response to the economic turmoil caused by the pandemic, but he was chastised after it was revealed that his wife had avoided paying certain taxes in Britain.
