Devotees commemorate Lord Ganesha for ten days during Ganesh Utsav by welcoming Ganesh ji's idol inside their homes and, at the end of the festival, immersing it in bodies of water.
Lord Ganesha, often referred to as "Vighnaharta," is honoured for his power to dispel difficulties and bring luck and prosperity. Since he is regarded as the Lord of beginnings, people seek his blessings before undertaking new ventures. During this festival, devotees of Ganesha bring his idols home, perform rituals, and offer him ladoos and modak, two of his favourite delicacies.
This year, Ganesh Utsav will last from September 18 to September 28. Here are some essential guidelines to consider if you intend to welcome Ganpati Bappa to your home.
Do’s
1. Include a majestic crown or "mukut" when creating a Ganesha idol for luck and wealth.
2. Whether you create the idol yourself or buy it, make sure Lord Ganesha is sitting with his mouse companion and some "modaks" for prosperity.
3. When welcoming him home, drape a red cloth, or "chunari," over the Ganesha idol.
4. To make the Ganesha idol 'sthapana' auspicious, face it east, west, or northeast.
5. Make a festive environment and conch shells to welcome Ganpati Bappa.
6. You have the option of receiving Lord Ganesha for 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, or 11 days before performing the visarjan ceremony.
Don’t
1. Devotees and their families must refrain from eating garlic and onions after Lord Ganesha's installation (Ganpati Sthapna).
2. Never leave your house without Lord Ganesha. Make sure the idol is always with at least one family member.
3. Perform aarti, and puja, and give Lord Ganesha bhog (food offerings) as a sign of devotion before immersing him.
4. Perform Ganpati Sthapna on schedule, and observe the appropriate muhurat (time) for installation.
5. As a sign of respect and devotion to Lord Ganesha, refrain from consuming meat and alcohol during the 10-day festival.
