With relatives saying "muhmeethakijiye" (sweeten your mouth) at every moment, this might be a difficult time for some people trying to stay healthy, especially for people living with diabetes. Finding healthy food options to manage their diabetes can be challenging for them in the face of samosas, tikkis, Gulab Jamun, and ladoos. However, this doesn’t mean the wedding’s buffet – and preceding events – will not have any food you can consume.
Planning ahead and making wise choices will help you achieve the proper balance between taking part in the celebrations and managing your diabetes, helping you to avoid any unexpected blood sugar highs or lows. Here are some suggestions for keeping your diabetes under control during this period. 1. Have an action plan: If you are travelling to another city for the wedding, consult with your doctor in advance about how to properly manage your medication schedule, diet, and lifestyle during this time (including any adjustments to your medication, if needed). Have an action plan in case of an emergency. Bring the medicines you need, as well as your prescriptions (and set alarms to take them).
2. Seek support: Keep friends and relatives who will be attending the wedding informed of any assistance you may require in following your diabetes care routine.
3. Be prepared on the day: Start your wedding day with some exercise or yoga, which can help you lose weight, control your appetite, and lower your blood sugar levels. Have a low-carbohydrate, high-fiber snack before heading to the event. Plan ahead of time by keeping some nuts or a nutritious snack on hand just in case.

5. Opt for diabetes-friendly foods: At the wedding, fill half your plate with salad or a non-starchy vegetable, and a quarter with grains and starches (roti is a great choice!). Choose baked, roasted, or stir-fried dishes over fried items. Stick to fruit-based or sugar-free options.
6. Practice moderation: If you wish to try some mithai or cake, start with a small portion. You can also consume alcohol in moderation and stay hydrated by drinking water regularly.
7. Get moving: If you eat or drink more than you planned, some physical exercise may be beneficial - you can get on the dance floor and shake it off!
