Digital Desk: Women are the future, and the month of March recognises this. March is Women's History Month, commemorating International Women's Day and recognising women's accomplishments in cultural, political, and socioeconomic fields. The day serves as a reminder that we live in a gender-equal society, where there is no space for bias, preconceptions, or distinctions, and where everyone is treated equally, honoured, and cherished.
History
According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, the International Women's Day originated in labour movements. This occurred at the turn of the twentieth century in North America and Europe. "On February 28, 1909, the United States commemorated the inaugural National Woman's Day, which the Socialist Party of America dedicated in honour of the 1908 garment workers' strike in New York, where women protested against poor working conditions." On the final Sunday of February in 1917, women in Russia opted to protest and strike under the slogan "Bread and Peace" (which fell on 8 March on the Gregorian calendar). "Their struggle eventually resulted in the implementation of women's suffrage in Russia," notes UNESCO.
Significance
"International Women's Day is an opportunity to celebrate the progress achieved toward gender equality and women's empowerment, as well as to critically reflect on those achievements and aspire for a stronger momentum toward gender equality globally. It is a day to commemorate women's remarkable actions and to unify as a united force to pursue gender equality across the world," states UNESCO.
