Pataabi Raman said, "I am the Raja of my street; I can take my auto out whenever I want and work whenever I want."
Digital Desk: Life with minor incidents is just like tea without Sugar; we always get someone who makes our day beautiful and happy. A woman who hails from Bengaluru was stranded in the middle of a highway, and she described how an Uber auto driver came to her aid. She was taken aback when he spoke flawless English.
Pataabi Raman, a 74-year-old auto driver, stopped to help Nikita Iyer as she was running late for her office on the other side of town. "Please come in, Ma'am; you can pay whatever you want," he said. Nikita was taken aback by the older man's behavior and inquired how he spoke such good English.
"What happened next was a very enlightening 45 minutes," she said. Raman answered that he worked previously as an English lecturer and has done MA and M Ed.
"So you're going to ask me why I'm driving an auto, right?" Raman expected her next question. He stated that he had been driving an auto-rickshaw for 14 years.
He used to teach English at a college in Mumbai because he couldn't find work in Karnataka. "The only question raised to him was, "What is your caste?" "We will let you know," they said when he said his name was Mr. Pataabi Raman.
"Disheartened by this, he moved to Mumbai in search of work and was welcomed and given a job at the prestigious Powai college, where he worked for 20 years," Nikita wrote. Raman retired at the age of 60 and moved back to Karnataka. "Teachers are not well accommodated. You get the maximum earning of 10-15,000/-, and I don't have a pension because it's a private institution.
I make at least 700-1500/- per day driving a rickshaw, which is enough for my girlfriend and me, "He uttered, laughing. When Nikita joined him in his laughter, he said, "She is my wife, but I refer to her as my girlfriend because they must always be treated equally. When you say wife, husbands think she's an enslaved person who must serve you, but she's not inferior to me; she's sometimes superior to me.
She is 72 years old and looks after the house while I work 9-10 hours a day. We live in a 1 BHK in Kadugodi, and my son helps pay the rent of 12,000/-, but we are not financially dependent on our children.
They get on with their lives, and we go about ours happily. Now that I am the Raja of my street, I can take my auto out whenever I want and work whenever I want. Raman said with a great relief that could be seen on his face.
