    Digital Desk: In response to the abrupt rise in temperatures in some regions of the country, the union health ministry issued a heatwave advisory on Wednesday.

    Rajesh Bhushan, the union health secretary, gave practical recommendations to mitigate the effects of the heat due to the significant departure from the anticipated usual temperature at this time of year.

    The ministry also advised people to be ready with vital medications, IV fluids, ice packs, and ORS. The ministry also advised state governments to continue efforts on sanitization and capacity building of medical officers, health personnel, and grassroots level workers on heat illnesses (oral rehydration solution).  

    The ministry asked individuals to drink water often throughout the day and to take oral rehydration solutions (ORS) if necessary.

    "By consuming seasonal fruits and vegetables that are high in water content, they should maintain a high water consumption. Individuals should drink homemade beverages including fruit juices with additional salt, lassi, and lemon water "The statement stated. 

    In terms of diet, the health ministry advised avoiding alcohol, tea, coffee and carbonated soft drinks or drinks with excessive levels of sugar as "they really, lead to loss of more body fluid or may cause stomach cramps".

    Indians have been advised to avoid high-protein foods as well as stale foods.

    Dr Komal Malik, Head Dietician, Asian Hospital, Faridabad, explained why people should avoid eating protein-rich foods in the current climate.

    Because food takes time to digest, a regular non-vegetarian diet increases dehydration during a hot. 

    "A longer digesting process generates more heat in the body, leading to dehydration. Instead of tea and coffee, drink lemon water, coconut water, buttermilk, and electrolyte-rich fluids to assist relieve stomach pain or raise body heat. Hot foods should also be avoided "Dr. Malik stated.

    Eat fresh fruits and vegetable juices with your meals and follow a plant-based diet, according to the expert.

    Individuals have also been urged to dress in light, loose cotton clothing in order to stay cool and protect their heads from direct sunshine.

    "Keep windows and drapes closed during the day, especially on the sunny side of your house, to block direct sunlight and heat waves. Open them at night to let in cooler air "the advisory stated.
