The Daria-i-Noor, discovered in India, is the largest known pink diamond, weighing an estimated 182 carats.
Digital Desk: A rare 170-carat pink rough diamond weighing 34 grammes was discovered at Angola's Lucapa's Lulo Mine. The "Lulo Rose," as it is known, is said to be the largest pink diamond discovered in the last 300 years.
"This record and spectacular pink diamond recovered from Lulo continues to highlight Angola as an important player on the world stage for diamond mining and demonstrates the potential and rewards for commitment and investment in our growing diamond mining industry," Angola's Minister of Mineral Resources, Petroleum, and Gas, Diamantino Azevedo, said in a statement.
The diamond will be sold through an international tender organised by Sodiam EP, the Angolan State Diamond Marketing Company.
The pink diamond is the fifth largest diamond and the 27th 100+ carat diamond extracted in the Lulo Mining project, according to Lucapa Diamond Company, who called it a "historic recovery." The mining operation produced the largest diamond ever recovered in Angola in 2016, a 404-carat white stone known as the "4th February Stone."
When it was sold, it was brought for $16 million. According to reports, the Lulo Rose is expected to fetch even higher prices, as similar diamonds have fetched exorbitant sums in the past.
The 59.6 carat Pink Star was the priciest diamond ever sold in 2017, selling for $71.2 million USD.
The Daria-i-Noor, which was found in India and is thought to be 182 carats in weight, is the biggest pink diamond known to exist.
As per scientific reports, the physical characteristics that make pink diamonds so scarce also make the stones highly tough and difficult to shape. Pink diamonds are also quite rare to be found.
