In India, Krishna Janmashtami 2022 will be observed on the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Shraavana of Bhadrapad.
Digital Desk: Janmashtami is extensively observed nationwide, particularly among the Hindu community. The sacred Hindu trinity's third member, Lord Vishnu's incarnation Lord Krishna, was born on this day, and it is celebrated as such.
On the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapad, it is observed (which overlaps with August or September of the Gregorian calendar).
According to Drik Panchang, Janmashtami will be observed this year on August 18 and 19.
"Krishna Janmashtami is usually listed on two consecutive days." The first is for the Smarta Sampradaya, and the second is for the Vaishnava Sampradaya. The latter is the Vaishnava Sampradaya date. A single Janmashtami date means that both Sampradaya will celebrate Janmashtami on the same day," it explained.
Every year, Janmashtami is celebrated with great zeal, particularly in Mathura, Krishna's birthplace, and Vrindavan, where Krishna spent his childhood.
Devotees gather to perform dance dramas based on Krishna's life. Many devotees sing devotional songs and praise hymns. Some people even fast all day. One of the rituals performed on this day is the formation of a human pyramid, known as Dahi Handi.
The festival's mythological roots can be found in its origin. Numerous legends claim that King Kansa, the uncle of Lord Krishna, planned to murder the latter after learning that Krishna would do so.
So, as soon as Krishna was born, his father Vasudeva brought him to Gokul by crossing the Yamuna. He was brought up in this place by foster parents Yashoda and Nanda. Thus, Janmashtami commemorates both the birth of Krishna and his victory over King Kansa.
According to Drik Panchang, the Nishita puja time on August 19 is 12:05 am to 12:48 am, and the Rohini Nakshatra begins at 01:53 am on August 20 and ends at 04:40 am on August 21, 2022. Some devotees break their fast when Rohini Nakshatra or Ashtami Tithi ends.
In the meantime, Lord Krishna was born under the Rohini Nakshatra. However, Rohini Nakshatra does not fall on Ashtami Tithi this year.
