The formal name change can be implemented by the state government if the decision is approved by the ministry and other relevant agencies.
Digital Desk: A proposal to rename Aligarh as Harigarh was approved by the Aligarh Municipal Corporation with unanimous votes. At a meeting on Monday, Mayor Prashant Singhal presented the proposal, which had the support of every council member.
"The proposal to rename Aligarh as Harigarh was put out at a meeting yesterday. It was overwhelmingly supported by every council member. We will now forward the proposal to the government. I hope that the authorities will acknowledge this and agree to our request to rename Aligarh as Harigarh. This demand has been raised for a long time," Mayor of Aligarh Prashant Singhal stated, as cited by news agency ANI.
The number of places in the BJP-ruled state of Uttar Pradesh that will have their names changed may rise if the petition to rename Aligarh is approved by the government. The renaming of Allahabad to Prayagraj in January 2019 is among the most well-known recent instances.
The name of any city or region within the state may be changed by the state government. A civic body will write to the state government following the unanimous approval of a draught resolution changing its name. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) will then receive the resolution from the state government for approval. The formal name change can be implemented by the state government if the decision is approved by the ministry and other relevant agencies.
Uttar Pradesh's name-change Odyssey
A zila panchayat meeting in 2021 accepted a proposal to rename Aligarh as Harigarh, and Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, received the request. Chief Minister Adityanath indicated in 2019 that his administration will continue renaming locations all around the state.
"We took action based on our gut feelings. We renamed Allahabad as Prayagraj, the Faizabad district as Ayodhya, and Mughal Sarai as Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhayay Nagar. The government will take action when necessary," Yogi Adityanath stated.
Members of the BJP government have demanded that additional cities be renamed in addition to Allahabad and the Faizabad district. Muzaffarnagar's new name should be Laxmi Nagar, whereas Agra's legislator suggested renaming the city Agravan or Agarwal.
