Babul Supriyo to formally step down as Lok Sabha MP today

New Delhi: Former BJP leader Babul Supriyo will formally step down as the Lok Sabha member of the Parliament today, weeks after quitting from the party and joining Trinamool Congress.

Offering gratitude to Lok Sabha speaker who had given him the appointment as Lok Sabha MP, Babul Supriyo said, “Sincere gratitude to honourable Speaker Sir Om Birla for granting me his time to formally resign as MP. I will not hold on to the berths/perks/salary of an MP now that I am no longer a part of the BJP that I won the seat for. If I have it in me, will win it again,” the singer-tuned politician tweeted.

Babul Supriyo began his career as politician after joining BJP in 2014. He joined West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) after quitting BJP on September 17, 2021.

Babul Supriyo was one of the staunch critics of Trinamool Congress and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee. There were talks within the BJP brigade that Supriyo was unhappy with the party for not giving him any cabinet berth. He had even announced exile from politics, but had not mentioned anything of joining TMC.

The exit of a heavyweight former minister was a shock for the Modi ruled BJP party. The former banker and Bollywood singer joined BJP in 2014. Between 2014 and 202, he served as a minister of the state of several departments including urban development, housing, urban poverty alleviation, ministry of heaby industries, public enterprises, the ministry of environment, forest and climate change etc.
