Digital Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a call from Professor Muhammad Yunus, the chief adviser of Bangladesh's interim government on Friday. The conversation, shared on social media by PM Modi, focused on the current situation in Bangladesh, particularly concerning the safety of Hindus and other minorities.
Modi expressed India's support for a democratic, stable, and progressive Bangladesh while Yunus assured that all minorities, including Hindus, would be protected.
Taking to X, PM Modi wrote, "Received a telephone call from Professor Muhammad Yunus, @ChiefAdviserGoB (Chief adviser of the government of Bangladesh) Exchanged views on the prevailing situation. Reiterated India's support for a democratic, stable, peaceful, and progressive Bangladesh. He assured the protection, safety, and security of Hindus and all minorities in Bangladesh.”
PM Modi’s statement followed his Independence Day address, where he highlighted the concerns of 140 crore Indians regarding the safety of minorities in Bangladesh amid recent unrest. This unrest has been ongoing since June and began with protests over job quotas, escalating into anti-government demonstrations.
The political turmoil in Bangladesh, including the recent removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her subsequent escape to India, has led to increased violence against minorities. Reports indicate that mobs have attacked and looted businesses and homes owned by Hindus, and there have been instances of lynching.
In response, Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus, now leading the interim government, has emphasized the need for protecting minorities. Yunus has reiterated that all citizens of Bangladesh, regardless of their religious background, are entitled to safety and equal rights.
According to a release from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the call between Modi and Yunus also included discussions on advancing bilateral relations in line with national priorities. PM Modi’s commitment to supporting peace and prosperity in neighboring nations remains strong, underscoring India's desire for a stable and harmonious regional environment.
As the situation evolves, both leaders are focused on ensuring that Bangladesh can move forward while safeguarding the rights and security of all its citizens.
