Bharat Bandh 2024: What to expect, what is closed, everything you need to know about nationwide shutdown on August 21

Several reports indicate that the Supreme Court's ruling permits states to create sub-categories within SC and ST groups, with the provision that reservations should be prioritized for those in greatest need.

Digital Desk: The Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti has called for a Bharat Bandh on August 21, which is tomorrow, to protest the Supreme Court's decision on SC/ST reservations. SC/ST groups in Rajasthan have expressed their support for the bandh.

According to a report by The Times of India, the police have been directed to increase their presence across all districts to prevent any unrest. DGP UR Sahoo also mentioned that Superintendents of Police have been instructed to maintain law and order in relation to the Bharat Bandh. “We have advised our officials to hold meetings with the groups organizing the bandh and with market associations to ensure smooth cooperation,” DGP Sahoo told TOI.

    Reason for the Bharat Bandh

Several reports indicate that the Supreme Court's ruling permits states to create sub-categories within SC and ST groups, with the provision that reservations should be prioritized for those in greatest need. This decision has sparked significant debate, and the main goal of the Bharat Bandh is to challenge this ruling and demand its reversal.

The bandh is expected to receive support from various social and political organizations, aiming to spotlight what is perceived as an unjust court decision.

Security Measures for Bharat Bandh 2024

To prepare for potential violence during the bandh, top police officials conducted a video conference with all divisional commissioners, district magistrates, and senior police officers. Western Uttar Pradesh, considered particularly sensitive, has been placed on high alert. Extensive measures are being taken to ensure public safety during the protests.

While public transport and private offices may be disrupted, emergency services such as ambulances will remain operational.
