Boxer Vijender Singh Switches from Congress to BJP
Soon after ditching Congress, Vijender Singh said, "I have joined the BJP in the interest of the nation and to serve the people. I want to help more and more people".

Digital Desk: The first Indian Olympic boxer, Vijender Singh, had retweeted a joke tweet from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi just a day before Singh decided to join the BJP.

On Wednesday, in the presence of the party's National General Secretary, Vinod Tawde, Vijender Singh became a member of the BJP in a historic move ahead of the approaching Lok Sabha elections.

Even on March 31, Singh reshared a tweet from Rahul Gandhi in which the politician claimed that Prime Minister Modi intended to "match-fix" the results of the Lok Sabha elections to alter the Constitution.

Soon after ditching Congress, Vijender Singh said, "I have joined the BJP in the interest of the nation and to serve the people. I want to help more and more people".

He said, "I will continue to call wrong as wrong and right as right and will work towards strengthening athletes" in response to a question regarding the recent wrestlers' protest against the BJP.

Singh joined the Congress in April 2019, delving deeper into politics. He ran for the Lok Sabha seat in 2019 from South Delhi but was defeated by Ramesh Bidhuri of the BJP, who also defeated Raghav Chadha of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

According to news agency PTI, Singh has been making the rounds in political circles as the Congress's nominee from Mathura, a seat that is presently held by Hema Malini of the BJP.

Vijender Singh is a member of the Jat community, which is well-known for having substantial political influence in several constituencies in Rajasthan, western Uttar Pradesh, and his native state of Haryana.

Notably, in January of last year, Singh and Rahul Gandhi took part in the inaugural phase of the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Karnal, Haryana. Numerous photos of him marching behind Rahul Gandhi became widely popular on social media.
