Digital Desk: Shivaji Raje Bhosle or Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born on February 19, 1630 in Pune's Shivneri Durg to Jijabai and Shahji Bhonsle. He is considered the greatest warrior ruler of the Maratha empire. Every year on February 19, Maharashtra and other areas of the country celebrate "Shivaji Jayanti" to commemorate the birth anniversary of the Maratha monarch. A war strategist

Shivaji Maharaj was a master of battle strategy. He saw the importance of the army's might at a young age. His father bequeathed him a 2,000-man army, which he expanded to 10,000 troops. Whether it was the Battle of Pratapgad, the Battle of Surat, or the Battle of Sinhagad, Shivaji won despite his scant resources. His military readiness and combat abilities were unrivalled. He used his knowledge of the local geography to entice the adversaries into steep slopes.

A regal king

Shivaji laboured for the poor and needy, and he built a strong civic authority in his domain. He urged the impoverished to join his army, promising them a chance to rise up the social ladder.

Religious yet remaining secular

Shivaji has equal regard for all religions. He never assaulted a religious building. He accommodated various religions while maintaining his Hindu religious convictions. Many of his loyal troops belonged to the Muslim faith. Shivaji was opposed to coercive religious conversions. He prepared the marriage of his daughter Sakhubai to Mahadji, the son of Bajaajirao Naik Nimbalkar, who was converted to Islam by Aurangazeb. He persuaded Bajaajirao to return to Hinduism at the event.

The Indian Navy's father

Shivaji was most likely the first monarch in the region to recognise the need of a maritime fleet in protecting his nation from foreign invasion. To secure the Konkan area, he even erected naval forts at Jaigarh, Vijaydurg, Sindhudurg, and other coastal locations.

Raigad's Chhatrapati

On June 6, 1674, the founder of the Maratha kingdom was solemnly anointed as Chhatrapati of Raigad. Chhatrapati Maharaj died on April 3, 1680, after suffering from a high fever for several days.
