Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge expressed his dissatisfaction, stating that the ruling party had frozen their bank accounts, causing several issues for the party during their election campaign.
Digital Desk: The Congress party on Thursday sought equal opportunities in the next Lok Sabha elections, citing unfair tactics by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). During a press conference held at the headquarters of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge expressed his dissatisfaction, stating that the ruling party had frozen their bank accounts, causing several issues for the party during their election campaign.
Kharge also insisted on the restoration of Congress' bank accounts, pleading with the constitutional bodies. "Appeal to constitutional bodies that they should allow our party to access bank accounts if they want free, fair polls", the head of the Congress stated.
Targeting the Centre, Kharge claimed that while attempting to stifle the opposition, the BJP had amassed enormous sums of money through electoral bonds. "[The] Party in power amassed funds through electoral bonds while freezing our accounts to create hurdles for us in fighting polls," Kharge stated.
Sonia Gandhi, a prominent member of Congress, said that funds from the organization's bank accounts were being taken away forcibly. Gandhi drew attention to the unfair tactics and stated that account freezing is a major problem as it is impacting Indian democracy overall.
Congressman Ajay Maken questioned in a news release why just the 11 bank accounts belonging to the Congress party were seized, although other political parties—including the BJP—were paying income taxes. The party requested to compute penalties after 31 years of assessment, he added, after receiving new notices from the Income Tax Department for FY 1994.
Rahul Gandhi, the head of the Congress, expressed his anger at the status of constitutional institutions' silence on the issue when discussing the disastrous effects of bank accounts being frozen. "You have been robbed of the country's democratic infrastructure," Gandhi complained.
"He claimed that because Congress hasn't been able to pay its employees for campaigning, valuable time has been wasted over the past month. We are not able to purchase train tickets for our leaders and employees, nor can we run print or digital advertisements. This is a criminal act against the Congress and the Indian people, " he declared.
Kharge intervened in the meanwhile, saying that the ruling class ought not to have any direct or indirect influence over constitutional bodies.
A penalty of Rs 210 crore was imposed by the Income Tax authorities earlier this month for alleged irregularities in the prior year's I-T returns. The Congress party argued against the use of a penalty for differences in prior year tax filings and declared that it was considering all available legal remedies.
