Eviction drive along Assam-Nagaland border turns violent, police use tear gas
Digital Desk: On Sunday, the eviction drive along the Assam-Nagaland border turned violent. The first phase of the eviction drive was peaceful. However, the second phase turned tense.

As per sources, security forces released several rounds in the air and tossed tear gas shells as citizens opposing the eviction threw stones at them.

The individuals, whom the government declares to be encroachers, were peacefully opposing in Lahorijan against the eviction operating by Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council. However, the problem began as authorities tried to pull down a worship site.

The locals, especially women, and children, gathered to stage the protest by carrying placards and the Gauhati High Court's order, stopping the administrators from entering the site.

Officials of the district administration attempted to convince those who were protesting. After making several attempts, security forces started lathi-charge. However, the protestors stayed headstrong.

Moreover, forces also used tear gas to control the outrage. Several protesters were injured during the incident. The officer-in-charge of Khatkhati PS, SI Raju Duwarah, sustained a head injury, and two other security officials were injured.

Officials expressed that the eviction drive was to vacate 100 "illegal" houses from the site. Karbi Anglong Deputy Commissioner Dibakar Nath and Superintendent of Police Pushpraj Singh managed the operation.

The Assam government has carried out different eviction drives for "encroachers" in various state regions. These eviction drives came into execution after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took control of the state.
