Digital Desk: Today marks the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation. On a gloomy note, on Saturday, a grand Mahatma Gandhi's statue was vandalized in Odisha's Kendrapara district.
The life-size concrete statue at the government-run Pakhyota Upper Primary School was discovered uprooted from the pedestal, police conveyed.
The school where the statue of Mahatma Gandhi was positioned has remained closed due to the pandemic.
An FIR under IPC sections 506 (criminal intimidation), 379 (theft) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), and the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971 was registered, stated Patkura police station inspector Saroj Kumar Sahoo.
It has been suspected that some addicts might have vandalized the statue, police stated, counting that a probe is underway to identify the culprits.
On the other hand, paying tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his 74th death anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed that it is the collaborative endeavor of the individuals to popularise the dignified exemplars of Bapu.
Besides, Union Home Minister Amit Shah even paid his homages to the Father of the Nation, who was shot dead on this date in 1948.
Amit Shah took to his Twitter handle and shared a post in Hindi. The tweet read, "Mahatma Gandhi instilled the spirit of Swadeshi, Swabhasha, and Swaraj in the heart of every Indian. His thoughts and ideals will always inspire every Indian to serve the nation."
Amit Shah is further scheduled to unveil the mural of Mahatma Gandhi at the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
Martyrs' Day, or Shaheed Diwas, is marked every January 30. The day which commemorates the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was the date when he was shot dead by Nathuram Godse in 1948. The people of the nation will always be grateful for the ideals and contributions of Gandhi.
