Hemant Soren, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday in connection with a money laundering case, petitioned the special PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) court to be allowed to take part in the trust vote that the new Champai Soren government was requesting.
The court remanded Hemant Soren to ED custody for five days on Friday.
On January 31, just hours before he was taken into custody by the Enforcement Directorate, Hemant Soren appointed Champai Soren to be his successor.
On February 2, Champai Soren took the oath of office as the new Chief Minister of Jharkhand. Ten days following his oath of office, Soren was required to demonstrate majority support in the Assembly.
The leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha has stated that up to 43 MLAs presently support them, and the Champai Soren-led government has to secure a 41 majority.
Amid concerns that the BJP could try to "poach" them in the lead-up to a trust vote, over 40 MLAs of the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led alliance were flown to Hyderabad on Friday, changing the political landscape in the state.
