Thane: In a horrific incident reported from Thane, Maharashtra, a woman was arrested along with a self-styled godman for allowing him to rape his 16 year-old-girl as a reason for curing her of an unexplained illness.
An acquaintance has been also arrested after the teen filed a complaint with Narpoli police, an official said.
The three have been charged under provisions of IPC, the POCSO Act and Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and Other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act.
The teen in her complaint said that she was facing severe neck pain and the accused claimed a dead uncle’s ghost possessed her. In order to cure off her neck pain, she was taken to a forest and the accused raped her. Her mother and her acquaintance took the teen to the jungle and got her raped by the godman.
A total of 371,503 cases of crime against women were reported across the country last year in comparison to 4.5,326 in 2019 and 378,236 in 2018 in the latest NCRB report.
Among states and Union territories, Uttar Pradesh topped the list with maximum number (49,385) of such cases followed by West Bengal (36,439), Rajasthan (34,535), Maharashtra (31,954) and Madhya Pradesh (25,640).
Crimes against women includes cases of rape, outraging modesty, dowry deaths and harassment, acid attacks and kidnapping.
