In Raghav Chadha suspension case, SC suggests the way forward: "Apologise..."

Digital Desk: The Supreme Court on Friday directed Raghav Chadha, an AAP MP to apologize to the Rajya Sabha chairman over his suspension from the house. The Rajya Sabha chairman was also asked by the court to consider the apology.

"Both parties have offered suggestions by both the parties during the hearing. The petitioner has indicated that he would like to apologize publicly and request an appointment; which would be considered sympathetically by the Rajya Sabha Chairman," the court said in its ruling.

On August 1, Raghav Chadha was suspended from the Rajya Sabha for "breach of privilege" following the accusations of four Members of Parliament that he had broken the rules by mentioning them in a House panel without their permission. The leader of the House, Piyush Goyal, moved a resolution in the Upper House of Parliament suspending Mr. Chadha till the privileges committee reported back.

Chadha was the second AAP member of Parliament to be suspended from the Rajya Sabha in the Monsoon session of Parliament. Sanjay Singh, a senior leader who was detained by the Enforcement Directorate on October 4 in relation to the Delhi liquor policy case, was removed from the Rajya Sabha on July 24.

Chadha's lawyer informed the court during today's session that the AAP leader is prepared to personally apologize to the head of the Rajya Sabha.

Representing the Center, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta concurred that Chadha's apology would be the preferable course of action.

On November 20, both sides are expected to update the court on their progress.
