Digital Desk: India expressed its deep concerns over the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting on Wednesday, October 25, 2023. India reaffirmed its unwavering support for the people of Palestine during the first open debate on the Israel-Hamas war, where a majority of council members called for an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian assistance for Palestinians.
The UNSC meeting, convened in the face of relentless violence and air raids, has thus far failed to produce a resolution, causing concerns about the further escalation of the conflict.
India's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador R. Ravindra, delivered a statement expressing India's concerns about the deteriorating security situation and the significant loss of civilian lives in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
"In these challenging times, India will continue to send humanitarian assistance to the people of Palestine. Every effort must be made to create conducive conditions for the resumption of peace talks," Ambassador Ravindra emphasized.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, India unequivocally condemned the Hamas attack that occurred on October 7. The UN representative for India noted that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was one of the first global leaders to convey condolences and prayers for the innocent victims and their families affected by the attack.
"We stood in solidarity with Israel during their moment of crisis when they were facing these terror attacks. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families of the victims, and our prayers are for the speedy recovery of the injured. Civilian casualties in the ongoing conflict are a matter of serious and continuing concern," the Ambassador stated.
In response to the dire humanitarian crisis triggered by the conflict, India has extended a helping hand to the Palestinians. Ambassador Ravindra announced, "India has sent 38 tons of humanitarian goods, including medicines and equipment, to the people of Palestine." India has consistently supported a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine issue, aiming for the establishment of a sovereign, independent, and viable state of Palestine living side by side with Israel within secure and recognized borders, considering Israel's legitimate security concerns.
India's support for the Palestinian people goes beyond humanitarian aid. Ambassador Ravindra mentioned that India continues to support the Palestinian people through bilateral development partnerships that encompass various sectors, including health, education, women's empowerment, entrepreneurship, and information technology.
In closing, Ambassador Ravindra reiterated India's commitment to a "just, peaceful, and lasting solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict," underscoring the country's dedication to the cause of peace and stability in the region.
As the UNSC grapples with the complexities of the Israel-Hamas war, India's unwavering support for the people of Palestine continues to be a vital component of the international efforts to address this longstanding and deeply rooted conflict.
