Indian, Chinese soldiers, exchange greetings on New Year

Digital Desk: On the occasion of New Year, Indian and Chinese soldiers exchanged greetings at Chushul-Moldo and DBO-TWD in Jammu and Kashmir's Ladakh area on Tuesday.

At the invitation of the People Liberation Army (PLA) of China, ceremonial Border Personnel Meetings (BPMs) were held to celebrate the New Year at the Chinese BPM hut at Chushul-Moldo and DBO-TWD meeting points in Eastern Ladakh, the Army said in a statement.

Major General Sanjiv Rai and Colonel S.S. Lamba led the Indian delegations, while Senior Colonel Liu Hou Jie and Colonel Song Zhang Li led the Chinese delegations.

The delegation members saluted the national flags as the ceremonial Border Personnel Meeting began. Following that, a formal address included greetings, wishes, and a vote of appreciation.

The address indicated a shared aim to maintain and improve border ties on a functional level. Following that, a cultural event featuring Chinese culture and traditions was held.

The formal Border Personnel Meetings came after the successful completion of Exercise Hand-in-Hand in Chengdu, China, when troops from both nations engaged, participated in joint exercises and discussed on-the-ground experiences.

"Both sides also sought to build on the mutual feeling to maintain peace and tranquility along the border," it said.
India and China were locked in a 72-day stand-off at Doklam in August 2017 in the wake of China building roads at the India-China-Bhutan tri-junction. The two countries have fought a war in 1962.
