Digital Desk: West Bengal is reeling from shock and outrage following the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
The victim, a PG trainee doctor, was found brutally assaulted and murdered on Friday, August 9. The tragic incident has caused widespread protests across the state, particularly among the medical community.
The postmortem report, detailed by PTI, revealed that the young doctor's neck was broken after the assault, and she suffered severe bleeding from multiple parts of her body. The horror of the crime has sparked an outcry for justice, with medical professionals demanding swift and stringent action against the culprits.
A civic volunteer named Sanjay Roy has been arrested in connection with the crime. The authorities took him into custody on August 10, and he has since been remanded to judicial custody. Reports indicate that the heinous crime likely took place in the early hours of August 9, between 3 am and 6 am.
In response to the crime, junior doctors, residents, and paramedic staff from several medical colleges across Kolkata, including RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata Medical College, and others, staged massive protests. Demonstrations also erupted in government-run medical colleges in Burdwan, Murshidabad, and other parts of the state, with the medical community demanding justice for their fallen colleague.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed the media, expressing her deep concern and ensuring that the case would be fast-tracked. Though she stated her general opposition to capital punishment, she asserted that the accused would be "hanged if necessary."
The horrific crime occurred shortly after the victim had dinner with her colleagues around 2 am. She then went to the hospital’s seminar hall to rest, as the institution lacks proper facilities for on-call doctors. Tragically, she was found raped and murdered the following morning.
