L&T's chairman and managing director, S N Subrahmanyan, faced criticism for his comments suggesting employees work 90 hours a week and not spend too much time with their wives.
Digital Desk: Larsen and Toubro (L&T) introduced a one-day paid menstrual paid leave policy for its women employees in a move that they presented just before International Women's Day. The workforce inclusion policy will help 5000 women workers since they constitute 9% of L&T's 60000 total employees.
The menstrual leave policy from L&T exists exclusively for staff members of the parent organization while excluding employees working in its financial services and technology subsidiaries. The implemented policy gives women employees immediate access to necessary rest during their menstruation period.
The recent announcement by L&T follows criticism aimed at Chairman S N Subrahmanyan after he suggested workers should devote 90 hours weekly to their jobs while limiting time spent with their wives. While companies like Swiggy and Zomato have introduced menstrual leaves in the past, L&T is one of the first major business houses to take this step.
The four states Bihar together with Odisha, Sikkim and Kerala have established systems that allow employees to take menstrual leaves. The Supreme Court had last year suggested the government formulate a policy on the issue.
