Digital Desk: The Lok Sabha witnessed unprecedented chaos on Wednesday afternoon as two individuals breached security and jumped into the House chamber, creating panic among Members of Parliament. The incident occurred on the solemn anniversary of the 2001 Parliament attack, adding an eerie resonance to the breach.
According to eyewitnesses, the intruders, identified as one Sagar, entered the chamber carrying gas canisters. One MP described the moment as surreal, with the sudden appearance of the individuals and yellow smoke filling the air. The Lok Sabha was adjourned immediately, and MPs were swiftly evacuated.
Reports suggest that the intruders sprayed a substance causing eye irritation and other difficulties. Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury detailed the incident, stating that the individuals jumped from the public gallery, were overpowered by members, and one of them sprayed gas, leading to discomfort among those present.
Trinamool Congress leader Kakoli Dastidar added, "Unknown people jumped from the gallery, started shouting slogans, and sprayed some gas." Congress MP Karti Chidambaram expressed serious concerns, noting the breach on the significant date and emphasizing the potential danger of the yellow smoke, describing it as a "serious breach of security."
The incident raises questions about the efficacy of the parliamentary security apparatus, prompting calls for a thorough investigation into the breach and the strengthening of security measures to prevent future occurrences. The anniversary of the 2001 attack served as a stark reminder of the need for constant vigilance in safeguarding the nation's democratic institutions.
