Digital desk: In the Lok Sabha and four state assembly elections, postal ballots can be used by media personnel covering "polling day activities" who are holding authorization letters from the Election Commission and those who work for vital services like the metro, trains, and hospitals.
All state chief electoral officers have received notice from the Election Commission (EC) regarding the groups of "absentee voters on essential service," who are designated to cast mail-in ballots.
For assembly elections, postal ballots were used by journalists covering poll day events and by those providing critical services. However, this facility has been expanded for the Lok Sabha elections.
"The departments of the notified category of electors may be informed accordingly and may be asked to nominate 'Nodal Officer' for the purpose of the postal ballot facility to such electors. The Nodal Officer may be briefed about the facility and the responsibilities and duties to be carried out by him/her", the EC letter to all chief electoral officers read.
“Media persons to whom authorisation letters have been issued with the approval of the commission to cover polling day activities” are among the various categories identified for the use of postal ballots.
A representative for the Election Commission stated that journalists in Delhi who have been granted permission by the commission to cover the polls on election day may choose to vote by mail.
They can collect Form 12D from the corresponding district election officer's office in the parliamentary constituency in which the voter is enrolled.
Additionally, they can download the form from the chief electoral officer's website.
