The day has enormous historical and cultural significance since it emphasises the critical function of the press in a democratic society.

The Press Council of India is a statutory body that was established to safeguard press freedom and to preserve and develop journalistic standards. Under the Press Council Act of 1978, the quasi-judicial body was re-established in 1979.
