    Nearly 1.68 lakh people died in road accidents last year in India: Road Ministry report

    Digital Desk: In 2021, there were 4,61,312 road accidents, resulting in 1,68,491 deaths and 4,43,366 injuries, according to the recent data issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). The report titled 'Road accidents in India -- 2022' stated that there has been a 9.4% increase in deaths and an 11.9% increase in accidents year over year. In 2022, there was a 15.3% increase in injuries reported.

    The research states that in 2022, there were 4,61,312 reported accidents nationwide. Of those, 1,51,997 (32.9%) occurred on national highways (NH), including motorways; 1,06,682 (23.1%) occurred on state highways (SH); and the rest 2,02,633 (43.9%) occurred on other roads.

    "Out of the total of 1,68,491 fatalities reported in 2022, 61,038 (36.2 per cent) were on national highways, 41,012 (24.3 per cent) were on state highways and 66,441 (39.4 per cent) were on other roads," it stated.

    The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), acting under the Asia Pacific Road Accident Data (APRAD) base project, provides the data and information that police departments in states and union territories provide to the UN every year in standard formats, which forms the basis of the annual report.
