Digital Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Lakshadweep has ignited controversy as Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge criticized him for neglecting the strife-torn northeastern state of Manipur.
In a press conference, Kharge expressed dissatisfaction, accusing the Prime Minister of prioritizing photo sessions and temple inaugurations over addressing the ongoing violence in Manipur.
Kharge's comments were fueled by the prolonged ethnic violence in Manipur since May 2023, resulting in over 180 casualties and numerous injuries in clashes between the Kuki and Meitei communities. The northeastern state has also witnessed a surge in sexual assault cases and heinous crimes.
During the press briefing, Kharge lamented the Prime Minister's absence in Manipur, contrasting it with his extensive travels to various destinations for photo opportunities. He questioned why the Prime Minister had not visited Manipur despite the alarming situation.
The criticism coincided with the announcement of the Congress party's 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,' a foot march from Manipur to Mumbai led by Rahul Gandhi.
Kharge highlighted the yatra's objective to connect with diverse segments of society, including NGOs, journalists, farmers, Dalits, backward classes, tribals, and the intellectual class. The 66-day, 6,700-kilometer march aims to address public concerns and convey the party's vision.
Kharge also took the opportunity to voice concerns about the alleged misuse of central agencies by the BJP-led Centre to intimidate the Opposition.
He claimed that these agencies unfairly target Opposition members but clear individuals once they join the BJP, questioning the justice in such practices.
Unveiling the logo of the upcoming foot march during the press conference, Kharge emphasized its primary goal of "protecting the Constitution and opposing existing dictatorship" in the country.
The 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra' is slated to commence on January 14, covering 110 districts across the country and concluding in Maharashtra on March 20.
As the political tension escalates, these developments underscore the widening rift between the ruling party and the Opposition, setting the stage for a charged political landscape in the coming months.
