Digital Desk: The largest office building in the world, the Surat Diamond Bourse in Gujarat, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday.
The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) declared in a statement that the Surat Diamond Bourse will be the biggest and most contemporary hub for the global diamond and jewellery industry.
The structure will serve as a major international hub for the trade of jewellery and polished and unpolished diamonds, the statement added.
It will include a cutting-edge "Customs Clearance House" for import and export, a jewellery mall for the retail jewellery industry, and a building housing safe vaults and foreign banking.
The structure, which is a component of Diamond Research and Mercantile (DREAM) City, was named the world's largest office building by Guinness World Records in August.
Starting in February 2015, the Surat Diamond Bourse building will be completed in 2022. Constructed at an approximate expense of Rs 3,500 crore, the 67 lakh square feet of floor area of the structure can accommodate over 4,500 offices for diamond trading.
Constructed on a 35.54-acre property, the megastructure features 15 stories in addition to nine ground towers with office space ranging from 300 square feet to one lakh square feet. There is a central spine connecting the nine rectangular towers. The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) has awarded the building a platinum rating.
Notably, the Director of Kiran Gems and billionaire diamond trader Vallabhbhai Lakhani moved his Rs 17,000-crore company near Diamond Bourse and is developing a mini-township to house his employees.
