Digital Desk: The "historic" Article 370 judgment by the Supreme Court has been praised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who described it as a "resounding declaration of hope, progress, and unity" for the people of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. In a detailed post on X, less than an hour after the court's decision, he also assured the citizens of the former state that his government was committed to fulfilling their goals.

"Today's Supreme Court verdict on the abrogation of Article 370 is historic and constitutionally upholds the decision taken by the Parliament of India on August 5, 2019," the Prime Minister stated on Monday.

"For our brothers and sisters in Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh, it is an overwhelming proclamation of optimism, advancement, and unification. "The court has strengthened the fundamental unity that we Indians cherish with its great wisdom," he remarked.

"I want to reassure the strong people of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh that we will always be committed to helping you achieve your goals. We are committed to making sure that the advantages of progress spread not only to you but also to the marginalized and vulnerable groups that were negatively impacted by Article 370."

"The verdict today is not just a legal judgment; it is a beacon of hope, a promise of a brighter future and a testament to our collective resolve to build a stronger, more united India," he concluded.

Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, who led the centre's Parliamentary push for Article 370 despite strong opposition, released an equally long statement praising the PM's "leadership".

"With the repeal of Article 370, the rights of the underprivileged and destitute have been reinstated, and acts of separatist and stone-throwing have ceased to exist. The region is now filled with the sounds of beautiful music and cultural tourists; ties of unity have grown stronger, and the region's integrity with Bharat is reaffirmed," he stated.

The Union Home Minister stated on X, "It is once again the Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh that always belonged to our nation and will continue to be so."

This morning, a five-person Supreme Court Constitution Bench upheld the national government's decision to divide Jammu and Kashmir and remove its unique status under Article 370 of the Constitution.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud headed the bench that determined that Jammu and Kashmir did not retain sovereignty after joining India in 1947 and that Article 370 was a "temporary" measure intended to facilitate that union.

Consequently, the court stated that Jammu and Kashmir no longer require special status.

Jammu and Kashmir were granted its own constitution and decision-making rights for all matters barring foreign affairs, communications, and defence under Article 370. Its removal ended the special status of the state.
