Digital Desk: As many as 11 married women in Uttar Pradesh's Maharajganj district have allegedly absconded with their lovers shortly after receiving the first installment of the PM Awas Gramin Yojana, a government scheme that provides financial aid to low and middle-income families for constructing permanent homes.

The issue surfaced when Sanjay reported his wife, Suniya, missing following the disbursement of Rs 40,000 from the scheme. Initial inquiries conducted by the Block Development Officer revealed that Suniya had fled with an unidentified individual, carrying the recently received Rs 40,000 installment.

Recently, around 2,350 beneficiaries in Maharajganj district received payments under the PMAY scheme. Subsequently, ten similar cases were reported where husbands notified authorities of their wives to be missing.

Suniya's father-in-law urged the government to transfer the remaining two installments directly to Sanjay's account, stating, "The funds were deposited into our daughter-in-law's account, only for us to discover later that she had absconded with someone else. We request the government to transfer the funds to our son's account."

Expressing concern over the misuse of the scheme, Maharajganj District Magistrate Anunay Jha stated, "It has come to our attention that eleven women misappropriated the first installment of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana by not utilizing it for housing construction. The concerned department has been instructed to pursue legal action against the beneficiaries and recover the misused funds."

This incident is not an isolated one. Earlier, four women in Barabanki district similarly disappeared with their partners after receiving Rs 50,000 from the scheme.
