Digital Desk: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced a bold vision for the northeastern region of India on Tuesday. Speaking at a press conference held at the Hotel Radisson Blu in Guwahati, Gadkari proclaimed that by the end of 2024, the road infrastructure in the Northeast will resemble that of the United States.

Gadkari, who is on a visit to the region to oversee national highway projects in Assam and neighboring states, provided a comprehensive update on the government's ambitious plan. He emphasized the immense scale of the infrastructure development projects currently underway, covering a total length of 17,470 kilometers with a staggering budget of Rs 3 lakh crore.

The union minister commended the local contractors who have been actively contributing to these projects and pledged to prioritize their involvement in ongoing and future initiatives. He stated, "We are going to give work to contractors here instead of those from outside. We have found that they are doing a good job."

Gadkari also expressed his appreciation for the proactive role of the Assam state government in facilitating these projects. He commended Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his leadership and commitment to the region's development.

In Assam alone, Gadkari provided a detailed breakdown of the progress, with 48 projects covering 802 kilometers already completed and upcoming projects with a budget of Rs 40,863 crores in the pipeline. Ongoing projects totaling 1,200 kilometers come at a cost of Rs 37,700 crores, and 136 projects stretching over 2,099 kilometers have been completed at a cost of Rs 12,164 crores.

The grand vision for Assam includes 248 projects, extending over 4,091 kilometers, at a cost of Rs 1 lakh crore. This includes future plans like ropeway projects and the development of a multimodal hub at Jogighopa.

Gadkari didn't limit his vision to Assam alone. He outlined similar projects in other northeastern states, underscoring the massive scale of the effort. In total, 794 projects are in progress, spanning 17,470 kilometers and necessitating an investment of Rs 3 lakh crores. These projects, which have the full support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, are expected to usher in a new era of infrastructure development in the Northeast.

The announcement by Nitin Gadkari signifies a commitment to transforming the region's road infrastructure, making it on par with international standards. It holds the promise of better connectivity, economic growth, and improved quality of life for the people of the Northeast. With the tireless efforts of the local contractors and the strong backing of the central and state governments, the dream of American-like roads in the northeastern region of India may soon become a reality.
