Yogi Adityanath feels sad over UP violence; promises strict actions

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath stated that he felt sad about the UP violence on October 3. Yogi said he would take strict actions against those involved with the violence following an investigation.

As per sources, CM Yogi also appealed to his people of the state to maintain peace.

Violence broke out in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, where farmers continued protests since morning over a visit by Minister of State in Ministry of Home Affairs, Ajay Mishra and Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Keshav Maurya.

Farmers unions stated that two of the protesters were run over by a vehicle in the minister's convoy, in which his son and other relatives were seated.

The officer stated the other four who died were occupants of the vehicle that allegedly ran over the farmers.

Visuals recorded vehicles set on fire from the site as a man, possibly injured, lied on the ground. There was a substantial police presence in the region.

Farmers unions have asked all farmers' organisations across India to protest at District Magistrates' offices in all districts within noon and 1 pm today. Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait and others from Punjab and Haryana were on their way to the UP district.

The Union further alleged that eight farmers were wounded. "In Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, 2 farmers have died and 8 farmers were seriously injured after the vehicles of the ministers' convoy crushed the farmers standing on the side of the road, protesting against the programme of the Union Minister of State for Home," tweeted the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of farmers.

Lalit Kumar, the medical officer of the district hospital in Lakhimpur Kheri, stated two persons were dead while taken to the hospital. One was seriously wounded. "No postmortem has been conducted. They want the Union's go ahead," he continued.

One named Mishra from the village held a function for the state's deputy chief minister, Keshav Maurya's visit. Maurya was supposed to visit the function organized by Mishra.

The farmers decided to block their visits over Mishra's recent speech in which he has brushed off the protests, stating it was a demonstration of "10-15 people and it would take merely two minutes to make them come in line".

"The farmers had planned to gherao a helipad to stop the Deputy Chief Minister from getting off. But, once that program ended and most people were on their way back, three cars came… and mowed down the farmers… one farmer died on the spot and another in the hospital," stated Darshan Pal, a leader of the farmers' union.

One of the leaders of the SKM, Tejinder S Virak, was severely wounded and was admitted to a hospital in Lakhimpur Kheri.

There has been no evidence of the losses or injuries from the administration yet.
