Digital Desk: An elderly woman and widow of a Lt General suffered a brain stroke after she was allegedly denied a pre-booked wheelchair by Air India authority at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi. The 82-year-old woman was admitted to the ICU for potential brain bleeds following a fall at the airport.
As per reports, the woman was travelling to Bengaluru on March 4, when the heartbreaking incident occurred. The woman's grandson, who was also travelling with her, approached the assistance desk outside the airport to provide a wheelchair. However, they did not receive any help after waiting for about an hour, which led the woman and the grandson to walk to the airport entry gate. Unfortunately, the elderly woman collapsed near an airline counter, sustaining severe injuries on her head, nose, upper lip, and tongue.
Taking to X, the senior citizen's granddaughter Parul Kanwar said, "I post this because I have no choice, and because it infuriates me that there is such little value for human life and wellbeing."
"Air India, you treated my grandmother so poorly, and with such little regard. You should be ashamed."
Reacting to the incident, Air India in an official statement clarified that the claim of denying a wheelchair or any assistance was baseless. It added that due to unprecedented peak demand at the time, a wheelchair could not be provided within the 15 minutes she and her grandson spent waiting for it. The airline denied the allegation of the passenger waiting for an hour for the wheelchair.
