At Eid prayer, “ready to shed blood,” Mamata Banerjee’s fierce stance against CAA, UCC

She emphasised the unity of religions and urged against being swayed by electoral agendas

Digital Desk: During an Eid prayer gathering in Kolkata, Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, reaffirmed the state's stance against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC), and Uniform Civil Code. 

"We are ready to shed blood for the country but will not tolerate torture for the country. UCC is not acceptable. I want harmony in all religions. Your safety. Your life. We will not accept CAA, NRC, or UCC," she said, as quoted by India Today.

She emphasised the unity of religions and urged against being swayed by electoral agendas. Banerjee declared Bengal's readiness to sacrifice for the nation but insisted on rejecting oppression. She cautioned against potential election-induced conflicts and stressed the importance of solidarity in safeguarding everyone's well-being. 

Banerjee's remarks followed Union Home Minister Amit Shah's criticism of her alleged misinformation on the CAA, urging refugees to apply for citizenship without fear. The CAA, enacted by the Centre in March, facilitates citizenship for specified religious migrants from neighbouring countries. 

Banerjee's resolute stance underscores the ongoing debate over the CAA and its implications, highlighting the complexities surrounding citizenship and communal harmony in India.
